Imagine yourself as a child from a small village, with no electricity, no clean water, and you have to go to an only elementary school with two teachers for 300 children from four villages. Because of that, most children drop out of school at an early age and start working. This is my childhood story. I was born in a very small village in the rural area of Shan State. I didn't get a chance to learn how to speak in English until I finished high school. My mom didn't even get to finish her elementary school because she had to quit school when she was 12 to work for her family. Because of all the unfortunate circumstances I've experienced firsthand, it's always been my lifelong mission to give back and provide quality education in my community. It's the reason I founded Empower Education Campaign, EEC, on May 15, 2019. As we all know that English is an international language, and it's a tool that we can use to communicate with the world. My goal is to provide a free English-speaking community where learners can empower each other through this platform. In 2019, I started working as a full-time volunteer English teacher with just 15 students at the beginning of my journey. After one and a half year, I was able to provide free English classes to over 150 students. Now it's been almost six years, I've been able to touch the lives of thousands of students. To me, this campaign is more than a regular class or club. It's about sharing the stigmatizing and empowering topics in our society, such as mental health, body image, self-confidence, gender equality, et cetera, and listening to the untold stories of my students and empowering each other through learning and teaching. It's a program where learners can learn to break their fears and develop their social skills, critical thinking skills, and self-skills, the skills that they can access at the governmental schools because of the conservative education system in my country. In order for my students to be able to raise their voice and speak confidently in public, I've conducted 10 talk shows. We can be the voice for them, we can show them the light. It's a platform where learners can also share their life experiences, stories, and perspectives by doing public speaking. I've also organized and hosted over 20 free public speaking clubs, free online speaking camps, free online workshops, outdoor activities, innovation sessions, group challenges, interviews, face-to-face live chats, and EEC podcasts. Seeing the improvements of my students, seeing them learn and grow, seeing them get inspired and empowered through this platform, it's the most fulfilling part of my life as a teacher. From 15 students to over a thousand students within six years, what I've learned from this journey is it takes one person to begin. All we did is just one small step to help and contribute to our society. I don't have a lot of materials to give back to the world, but as an educator, I believe in the power of education. I believe education can change the world. Let's encourage more and more people to give back and provide quality education in our community. Let us remember one teacher, one student, one book, and one world.
