
The vejigante is a prominent figure in the carnivals of Puerto Rico, mainly in the festivals of Loíza and Ponce. His presence at the island's festivities arrives through African traditions, then merged within Spanish celebrations. This colorful being may look scary, but it also represents joy, struggle, resistance and protection.The colors of this ensemble represent the bodies of water of our island, and coastal and underwater vegetation. The intention of these shades is to create awareness to preserve them, to allow access, the quality of them, and to protect them, as vejigantes protect
